iTunes Error (0xFFFE7958)

On January 28, 2006, in Miscellaneous, by Henshaw

the small appleMy problems with iTunes continue. It has now been two weeks since I tried to purchase “the injury” episode. Every three days I receive a new form letter email from iTunes support informing me that my problem has “escalated.” At this rate I’ll be hearing from Steve Jobs this time next month.

I have frequented the forums in the meantime looking for an answer. The only thing I’ve found is confirmation that other people are having the same problem and the same terrible service from Apple. If Apple wants iTunes to stick around they need to drastically improve the support drastically or the word is going to get out.

Having the same error message while trying to download an episode of DH. Have you received a solution? Every time I log on to itunes, my system tries to auto download and it not only doesn’t work, but it also clogs up my system. Did you receive any help??

  2. nemov says:

You can follow my progress on the forum here. So far I haven’t had much luck. I’ve come across something today that might be the answer, but I won’t have a chance to test it until later today.

Same problem here. Trying to download Battlestar Galactica Ressurection. “An unknown error occured (0xFFFE7958)

Here’s the predictable end of my error saga. I hadn’t heard from iTunes support in a week so I had to resubmit my problem. Here is their response:

    Dear Michael,
I apologize for the negative experience you have had over the last 3 weeks, since you reported the error you received while attempting to download, “The Injury” episode from The Office.
As requested, I refunded your account for this purchase, as well as adding 5 free song credits to your account. You can use these song credits to download the songs of your choice.
We have made some great progress in determining the cause of the issue that affected your download and some customers have reported that they were able to successfully download video titles that gave them the same Error OxFFFE7958 message.
I do not have confirmation that the issue is resolved, so I recommend that you do not repurchase this video within the next two weeks.
However, please feel free to use the free song credits, at your leisure.
The next time you log in to your iTunes Music Store account, the free song credits will appear in the top right corner, by your account name. When you download songs from the iTunes Music Store, the credit will be used as payment until all credits have been used or have expired.
Note: Song credits are only valid toward the purchase of individual songs only.
If the credit is not immediately visible in your account, please sign out of the iTunes Music Store and then sign in again. This will refresh your account and your song credit(s) should appear.
We value you as a customer and we strive to create a perfect experience for our customers. I hope you do not encounter the Error OxFFFE7958 error again, but if you do we will be better prepared to resolve your issue in a timely manner.
    Sincerely,
    Hazel

The lack of support during the last 3 weeks has been shameful. This is now my third attempt to get this problem resolved. Since you seem unable to solve or even acknowledge the problem, could I please receive a refund for the original purchase?
If for whatever reason someone in iTunes support decides to help (this is big if) below is all the information you need from me. Please do not bother me “your problem has been escalated” because that obviously means nothing except wait 5 more days before you have you have submit the problem again.

My advice for anyone that receives that error is to go ahead and ask for a refund. iTunes’ support is only designed to answer FAQ and offer refunds.

  5. Tom says:

Same error here (0xfffe7958) when downloading Battlestar Galactica: Act of Contrition

  6. David Schulman says:

I’m having the same problem with downloading Battlestar Galactica and Drawn Together. This sucks if they are not fixing it. Also sounds like a problem that is growing.

  7. Kimo Bonnelycke says:

Same issue here with 2 episodes of Drawn Together and 1 episode of Monk. I had the same issue a while ago with an episode of Law and Order, but it worked it self out some how and it eventually downloaded.

  8. Mike Hawk says:

yeah i was dling “Jackass” episode 4 when BOOM! our favorite little error came up! I’ve now got one message for iTunes…SHOOOOOW MEEEEE DAAAA MOOONEY!!!!!!1

  9. Mary Brown says:

I am having the same problem with an episode from Lost called “What Kate Did”, on Feb. 5. I e-mailed Apple support, they sent me back instructions to follow, which I did. I almost had the episode downloaded successfully when the dreaded error msg., OxFFFE7958 appeared again. How can we solve this problem? I now hesitate to download anything else since they take the money from my account and I get nothing in return but this wonderful message.

  10. Jesse Wilson says:

I’m getting the problem downloading “Orientation” from Lost. Bizarre. One thing I tried was logging into a different Mac with my same Apple ID, but that also failed. Weird!

  11. Nesto says:

I have the same error when downloading Lost episodes “Orientation” and “What Kate did”. Please any help would be fantastic.

  12. nemov says:

This error must be becoming more frequent. A quick search on google only finds my site. I have given up on iTunes support. I’m just waiting for an official fix before I try to purchase another video. I appreciate all the feedback. If anyone figures out a solution please post it.

  13. poop says:

I baught the desperate house wives’ “there’s somthing about a war” episode then this damn messege appears on the screen. Im like what the hell? I tryed downloading that episode like 10 times after that and still the same thing.apple better pay me or else…

  14. zeke bean says:

Is everyone reporting the issues to the Better Business Bureau or someplace like that? I-Tunes SUCKS and will keep sucking unless they get fined or something.

  15. Danielle says:

I’m having the same problem downloading “Orientation” from Lost. This is ridiculous. They need to figure this crap out before they post completely addictive television shows for us to download.

  16. Lost in the Big Apple

Apple maybe winning the download wars, but I wonder for how long. I, like many other users in the last month, have run into a download issue using iTunes. The discussions and complaints list for miles in the Apple Support Discussion Boards. In all thes…

  17. Gerry says:

This same thing happens to me with “The Secret” for The Office. I DLed the season, it successfully loaded the one before and after that, but it keeps giving me this error…it downloads it all the way, then BOOM! I love it. iTunes, you really know how to fuck with someone who spend $400 on your product…and regardless of anyone’s opinion, that is a lot of dough!

  18. zeke bean says:

I’ll trade you “Orientation” for “What Kate did”

  19. Daniel says:

Same error message here. Phone support sucks, too.

  20. nemov says:

You found a phone support number? Can you provide that number? Someone posted it on the iTunes support forum and the post was quickly deleted. It is obvious Apple doesn’t want calls.

  21. Steven Mendel says:

I’ve tried downloading Orientation (LOST Episode 3 Season2) and have been receiving the same error: 0xFFFE7958. I really hope they fix it quckly, I need my LOST addiction fix.

  22. frenk says:

Finally a site that gives me an answer to the “0xFFFE7958″ problem, after Itunes support totally slacked. I need the “Scattered” episode from Battlestar Galacticta, eveything else from the second season (2-10) downloaded fine. Anyone up for a trade?

  23. nemov says:

I did a quick check on my website statistics and there have been over 350 searches (google, yahoo, etc) for the (0xFFFE7958)error that have led to my site. I have also noticed more reports on the iTunes support forum. It is only a matter of time before this is solved. Apple can’t let this drag on much longer.

  24. Cathy says:

I also had trouble downloading from itunes, same error, for “Orientation” of Lost, Season 2. As suggested, I am getting a refund.
My hunch is that if you tried to download the same episode now, after a refund, that it would work. I’m going to try that after I get a refund.
I’m guessing that this is some silly, transient error, seen by relatively few people. Obviously SOME people have downloaded the episode I could not download.

  25. Rob says:

I am getting the same error trying to download the “Orientation” episode of Lost. Are there any other none itune sites where I can get it?

  26. David Schulman says:

I started a thread on the Discussion list – people here should keep the thread alive on the apple site. I hope this issue is resolved soon. I don’t want to download anymore videos until this is resolved.
    Here’s the link.

  27. Kerri says:

This is crazy!! After reading everyone’s comments on error OXFFFE7958 I have little hope that this will be resolved. I too could not download battlestar galactica Resurrection ship. What is the point of having this tecnology if it is such a headache to use!

  28. Adam says:

    The Office: Health Care.
There was an error downloading your purchased music. An unknown error occurred (0xFFFE7958).
Use the Check for Purchases command in the Advanced menu to try again later.

  29. Gary says:

I received the “0XFFFE7958 error” 5 out of 5 times that I tried to download season 2, episode 2 of “Lost”. Summary:
    season 2, episode 1 – OK
    season 2, episode 2 – 0XFFFE7958
    season 2, episode 3 – OK
If you kill iTunes when the download is about 95% complete and then copy the contents of …/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Downloads/Adrift.m4v.tmp somewhere else, you can copy it back and iTunes will continue to download from where it last stopped. iTunes will, however, delete the download once it has finished and then start downloading it again from the beginning.. followed by the 0XFFFE7958 error!

  30. Mike Simon says:

I had a similar problem (though mine was error -50). It told me to go to the advanced menu and click Check Purchases, which I did and then it repeated the same error. I’m halfway through downloading Valentine’s Day of the Office.
So…I tried logging into my account to check to see if my password needs resetting, but now it won’t let me into that,so I’m thinking there might be some problem with the authentication server in association with this download.
    Anyone able to verify this?

  31. John says:

I’m glad Google finally led me to this site so that I could see that it wasn’t just me. I’ve had no luck with Lost – “What Kate Did” or with Lost – “Orientation”.
But I experimented with a couple of episodes of The Office and they came down fine.
Hoping iTunes and Apple fix this. I was considering getting the Video iPod, but not if I can’t be assured of getting what I paid for.

  32. bayard says:

I too am having trouble with Orientation and What Kate Did. Why can’t someone at Apple work a few extra hours and fix this???

  33. ryshask says:

I fixed this problem by installing itunes on a second computer, downloading the episode, and then authorizing it. I then copied the show I wanted to watch to the compuoter with the original itunes collection….
Other variations might work, like un-installing itunes, re-installing, consolidating your library. but since I have a second computer I chose the quick route.
I know how much of a hassle this error can be so I thought I’d share my fix. good luck!

  34. middleman says:

Just another disgruntled customer checking in. I bought the complete first season of BSG. It downloaded everything fine, except for the “Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down” episode.
What ticks me off is that Apple clearly knows about this problem and offers no support on their website.
    Glad I googled this site.

  35. PG says:

I know what all of you are going through…I’m totally ticked off. I ended up wasting half my day yesterday trying troubleshooting my computer (thinking something was wrong with my machine and not iTunes). I tried over and over and over again to download Lost, Season 1, Raised by Others. I really think we ought to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. With the number of persons complaining here, the BBB will have to contact and Apple and make an inquiry. Apple is really screwing up bigtime by not addressing our problem. What terrible customer service!

  36. nemov says:

I was finally able to download the problematic episode of The Office without the dreaded error. I didn’t do anything special, it just finally worked after nearly a month. There’s no workaround, it’s just obvious Apple is too swamped to deal with errors like the one we’ve been experiencing.

  37. David Schulman says:

Apple finally acknowledged the problem with the following response. The refunded the money and then gave me a 5 music credit. I finally got the episode I was missing by gifting a friend the episode and fortunately it downloaded to their computer. I then copied it to CD and then copied it back to my computer. Finally, I needed their authorization (5 computers max) to play purchases on my computer. It worked.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience that you have experienced with error 0xFFFE7958. Our engineers are aware of the error and are working diligently to resolve this issue.
Please note that some customers have resolve the issue by re-installing or upgrading to iTunes version 6.2.

  38. middleman says:

You pioneers must have forced them to fix it because it actually downloaded for me today after only three days of trying. (see my Feb 12th post).
    Cool stuff.

  39. Cathy says:

I was also able to finally download “Orientation” today. I got my refund last week sometime and decided to give the download another go — it worked just fine.

  40. John says:

Downloaded and installed version 6.0.3.5 of iTunes today and both of my Lost episodes finally downloaded properly.
Keeping fingers crossed for the future.

  41. Chris says:

I’m having the same problem – I get the error message when downloading episode 9 of Desperate Housewives. I’ve downloaded 1-8 ok, and then got the error with #9. But then I downloaded episode #10 with no problem. Itunes support is terrible – they told the problem is my end with my software, firewall, or internet connection. They didn’t event bother to read my email – obviously it’s a server / file corruption problem (if it was on my end, how come I could download all the other episdoes? duh..). I have itunes 6.0.4. No resolution as of yet, but I wanted others to know this isn’t an isolated problem – reference this website when responding to itunes support.

  42. Chris says:

Update: I tried for 2 weeks via sending multiple emails to Apple Support where they “escalated” the issue. At one point there was a period of more than 5 days where I did not hear back from Apple. Basically, all messages continued to suggest that the problem was on my end (which we all know it wasn’t). In the meantime I had downloaded another 2 episodes of DH with no problem. The last message I received from Apple was also useless, asking had I checked under advanced/purchased tab (if they had bothered to read any of my emails they would have seen I had done this 7 different times with no luck, just a waste of bandwidth). They said perhaps my billing address was wrong. Huh?? How could I buy subsequent episodes if my billing address was wrong? This silliness has been going on for 2 weeks, and every couple days I try to re-download the episode. AND TODAY IT FINALLY DOWNLOADED! So, after multiple useless emails from horrible Apple support the episode worked. No changes were made on my end. Apple won’t take responsibility for this issue. My guess is after they get enough emails on a particular video with this error, then they fix the problem on the server. But they never will admit it is their fault. Reference multiple threads on Apple Support for this problem:

  43. aidler says:

This might not be the right place but you are lucky in the US. At least you get an answer from iTunes support (although it’s predictably useless). Here in Europe your chance to get any reaction from iTunes support is zero. At least we don’t have the problem with downloading tv show episodes and this is because you can’t buy any around here.
