Tonight millions of Americans are crowding into health food stores like Whole Foods to buy vitamin supplements. Who can blame them right? Everyone agrees vitamins are good for body. Well, the truth is that vitamin supplements are probably better for the mind than they are for the body. The New York Times has an article about the wealth of research which is largely ignored that states that taking supplements are pointless. Americans spend billions every year on these pills and there’s no evidence to suggest it’s worth the effort. Don’t rush out to Whole Foods to tell people. Quicker than you can say “Yes We Can” you will have an angry mob on your hands.
Nemov, how can this be, why don’t the pills work? Well, let’s just take a simple poll. How many friends in your life have suffered from scurvy? Unless you know some Somali pirates my guess is the answer to that question is zero. Most of the food consumed in the United States is pumped with the proper amount of vitamins. The key problem in the average American diet isn’t vitamin deprivation it’s too many saturated fats. I do believe in mind over matter. The pills probably have some kind of placebo effect on many people. Who am I tell people Santa Claus doesn’t exist?
