what is it about medical dramas?

Three years ago I made a difficult choice. For most of my thirty years I have avoided medical dramas. I made an exception for House. In hindsight I’m glad I started watching the best show on TV; however, how many of these shows do we need? There have been well over thirty medical dramas on TV over the past fifty years. The promo above is for a drama called Three Rivers.
The promo has the typical music, good feelings, and tough choices that are a hallmark of every medical drama. Is it the human fascination with death that drives these shows? I guess everyone can relate to hospitals. At some point everyone has some kind of experience at one. I just don’t understand why I have to watch a show about it. Medical dramas could easily be added to the list of Stuff White People Like.
Other typical dramas involve the police or courts. I wonder sometimes if these shows influence the public’s perception. Take House for example; rarely if ever does a patient die on the show. That’s not really an accurate portrayal of a real hospital. Shows like CSI make crime fighting look easy. When, in fact, many crimes can be difficult to prosecute.
There is a lot of reality TV these days, but in real life happy endings are not guaranteed. There’s no promise that everything works out in the end. In truth, true reality TV wouldn’t be very fun to watch.
