Katrina vs. Gulf Oil Spill

The new symbol of government ineptitude?

I know I’m starting to beat a dead horse here, but American’s reaction to the oil spill is puzzling. The Democrats and the press made hay during Katrina and it appears they’re paying a political price now that they’re in power. The President has spent his entire time in office blaming Bush for everything. Well, if all the problems (real or imagined) occurred because Bush was a moron why isn’t Obama solving these problems?

A month and a half after the spill began, 69 percent in a new ABC News/Washington Post poll rate the federal response negatively. That compares with a 62 negative rating for the response to Katrina two weeks after the August 2005 hurricane.

The answer to my question above is simple. However, progressives have boxed themselves into a corner on this one. They believe in government. They’re more worried about the God people than government ineptitude. I believe in the separation of Church and State. What about the separation of Utopian belief in government and state?

One Response to Katrina vs. Gulf Oil Spill

  1. Bob Weber says:

The reaction to the spill isn’t that surprising. Katrina was a natural disaster. The Federal Government had no hand in creating the Hurricane and no little or no responsibility for maintaining New Orlean’s levys. The only place the Bush administration fouled up was, allegedly, in the response and that was blown out of proportion. It always seemed to me that the real goal of the Katrina complaints was to cry racist against the white Texan.

The BP oil spill on the other hand should have been prevented by the government. This was a lease purchased from the government and there is a specific government agency responsible for inspecting and regulating oil drilling. The Obama administration let this disaster happen, and then took a back seat and let BP handle the cleanup.

This whole situation illustrates one of my primary complaints with the government. Progressives want more regulation, but the feds can’t manage to successfully regulate the items they already have oversight over. Instead of taking on more responsibility I would like to see Obama address the problems with the responsibilities he already has.
