New Hampshire Debate: Stephanopoulos Happens

On January 8, 2012, in Politics, by Henshaw

Last night’s New Hampshire debate was a strange affair. Mitt Romney has a commanding lead in New Hampshire, so one would assume he would be attacked by the other candidates. Instead, the only person who went after Romney was George Stephanopoulos. The mainstream media is just flat out irritating. Just when I think a debate can’t get any worse ABC lets a former Clinton campaign staffer moderate.

In the movie War Room, which chronicled the 1992 Clinton campaign, Stephanopoulos celebrates the victory and surmises that the United States will finally have universal health care. I think of that moment because the 2012 election is going to be about the economy and about ObamaCare. Yet, there wasn’t a single question about ObamaCare. The only question about the economy was about infrastructure.

Instead, Stephanopoulos asked questions about states banning contraceptives, gay marriage, and gay adoption. The candidates spent 30 minutes on issues that aren’t important and about which a President has little, if any, power to change. Stephanopoulos’ stupid question about contraceptives led to what I believe is Romney’s best moment in the campaign.

I thought Romney handled Stephanopoulos’ question about contraceptives very well. The whole premise of the question is comical. Stephanopoulos is supposed to be fair? He has no business moderating a debate, nor does what’s-her-face. The questions were ludicrous. One can gain insight from how delusional liberals are about the current state of affairs simply by watching these media yahoos rodeo clown their way through a debate.

The nation is on the brink of financial ruin and they’re worried about gays getting married and having kids? None of the GOP candidates pointed out that they share the same position on gay marriage as President Obama. I’m so excited that Stephanopoulos is back to host This Week. I didn’t even notice he had left.

If Mitt Romney is sworn in on January 20, 2013, he should shake Ron Paul’s hand first. Ron Paul has been the center of each of these debates. He attacks everyone and the liberal moderators love asking him questions. I can’t see how last night’s debate changed the race. Mitt Romney is simply running out the clock. Exit question: Could a Donald Trump moderated debate be any worse that what I watched last night?

Real Problems: The News of the World

On July 14, 2011, in Politics, Real Problems, by Henshaw

The left has been consumed in recent days with the phone hacking scandal in England that ended The News of the World. The only reason this is even a story in the United States is because Rupert Murdoch owned News of the World. Liberals didn’t bat an eye when CBS ran with a story that came from manufactured evidence during Rathergate. What about the ABC’s hit piece of Food Lion or NBC ‘s faked crash-test footage? Really, the list goes on and on, not to mention the continuous stream of shenanigans in the public sector.

The tabloid press in Britain and in Europe generally is terrible. My experience following European press has come from following soccer transfer speculation every Summer. It’s gotten to the point that I just ignore it. The number of fake stories is maddening. The fact that Murdoch owns News of the World is meaningless. Charlie Cooke has a good take on the mindset of liberals who are fascinated by this story. Here’s a video from the publicity stunt outside of Murdoch’s home in New York:

Other than wishful thinking, this story has nothing to do with the American press or FOX News. Also, just a few months ago some liberals were praising Julian Assange and WikiLeaks. Whatever happended to hacking to “speak truth to power.” Apparently illegal activity is okay under the right circumstances and directed at the proper targets. Liberals are also comfortable with illegal leaks as long as they’re damaging to republicans and if they’re published by the New York Times.

Leave it to the left to become obsessed over a non-story.

Mainstream Media's new name is Cheesestream Media

Tasty at the ballpark, but downright disgusting when packaged as news.

There are various ways to describe the traditional media in America. By traditional, I mean the media that dominated American newsgathering and dissemination for most of its history, first with the metropolitan daily papers, then radio and finally weekly newsmagazines and the big three television networks: ABC, NBC and CBS.

To some degree, the first all-news cable network, CNN, was and is part of this traditional media mix. But it was the forerunner of the New Media, which has successfully fragmented the monopolistic hold traditional media had on reporting news.

The most common term used to describe traditional media is Mainstream. This misses the mark, however, because it is increasingly irrelevant and no longer in the mainstream of American life. Conservatives derisively refer to it as the Lamestream Media, the Dinosaur Media and the Drive-By Media, among others. Liberals, on the other hand, tend to hang onto Mainstream. I suppose it’s comforting to hearken back to a day when news was controlled by the elite few whose opinions were developed in the vacuum of academia, Manhattan, Chicago and Los Angeles.

When in doubt, blame the Bible!

Distorting Christianity: The View’s Joy Behar who joined notable humanitarian Whoopi Goldberg on a walkout during an interview of Bill O’Reilly is spreading her religious tolerance to Christianity. Apparently being a Christian means advocating that homosexuals are acceptable targets of bullying. John Nolte at Big Hollywood points out the stupidity of Behar’s faux concern about the Bible.

Does this mean that the Bible stating your body is a temple leads to fat kids being bullied? Does this mean that the Bible’s opposition to fornication leads to unmarried couples living together being bullied? What about those who covet or don’t honor their mother and father or who use the Lord’s name in vain?

Nolte is right on the money on this one. The Bible is clear that bullying people is wrong. Christianity is a true religion of peace if Jesus’ teachings are taken literally. Islam, on the other hand, if taken literally isn’t exactly friendly, but of course people like Behar only have a problem with Christians for some odd reason. I’ll have to go back and check the Gospel of John, but I’m pretty sure Jesus Christ never advocating beating the sinners into conversion. Bullies bully because they’re bullies. I suppose anyone with a strong belief in something can use it as an excuse to bully. See Ms. Behar as a sterling example of this. She likes to paint anyone who disagrees with her as something sub-human and evil.

Dancing with the Almost Stars: By now everyone in America is caught up in the Bristol Palin frenzy on ABC’s Dancing with the Morally Challenged. My only question is how Meghan McCain missed out on this show. Apparently Bristol Palin has made it to the show’s finals and some people aren’t thrilled about it. A man in Wisconsin became so enraged about Palin’s participation on the show he went Elvis on his TV.

When Bristol Palin, the 20-year-old daughter of tea party favorite Sarah Palin, began her routine, Cowan jumped up and began swearing, saying something along the lines of “the (expletive) politics.” His wife said he was angry that a politician’s daughter was dancing on TV even though he felt she didn’t have talent. Janice Cowan told police her husband left the living room and came back about 20 minutes later with his shotgun, and then “raging,” with his face bright red, blasted the TV into the shards.

This is Palin Derangement Syndrome at its finest. This is another perfect example of the “right is prone to violence” meme that people like Bill Maher like to push. I have grown tired of the whole PalinMania. Much like I’m was tired of ObamaMania, but I’m not ready to start shooting my television. There are a few on the left that have gone as far as saying people are rigging the vote, but who cares? If a bunch of Grizzly Moms who love Sarah Palin want to watch the show and vote over and over what difference does it make? American Idol has been doing that game for a decade now and no one has complained.

So Much for the Rain Forest: The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors decided this week to ban plastic grocery bags in parts of Los Angeles. Shoppers who don’t bring their own reusable bags will be charged a ten cent fee to cover the destruction of the rain forest. Reducing the amount of plastic seems like a good idea, but there’s an inherent drawback in pushing shoppers toward using reusable bags.

The researchers tested 84 of the bags for bacteria. They found whopping amounts in all but one bag, and coliform bacteria (suggesting raw-meat or uncooked-food contamination) in half. And yes, the much-feared E. coli was among them — in 12 percent of the bags.

The researchers wrote in their discussion of the findings: “It is estimated that there are about 76,000,000 cases of food-borne illness in the United States every year. Most of these illnesses originate in the home from improper cooking or handling of foods. Reusable bags, if not properly washed between uses, create the potential for cross-contamination of foods.

Ah, the price of progress. We most choose between plastic bags in the ocean, cutting down trees, and contaminating our food. When will the madness end?

Fair and Balanced

On August 27, 2010, in Politics, by Henshaw

The left pulled together every ounce of its faux outrage when it learned that Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. contributed $1 million to the Republican Governors Association. I wonder how they feel about the fact that 88 percent of 2008 contributions by TV network execs, writers and reporters went to Obama and Democrats?

The Democratic total of $1,020,816 was given by 1,160 employees of the three major broadcast television networks, with an average contribution of $880.

By contrast, only 193 of the employees contributed to Republican candidates and campaign committees, for a total of $142,863. The average Republican contribution was $744.

This is hardly a shocking revelation to anyone who pays attention to the news on any network beside FOX. Most journalists lean left and despite their best efforts to remain objective their coverage tilts left. That’s why the Washington Post is so desperate for a race riot or anything they can cover that’s damaging to conservatives. I wonder how much these agents of change give to charity in comparison? Hmmm…

Bill Maher’s This Week Disaster

On May 4, 2010, in Politics, by Henshaw

Bill Maher and class are not synonymous

In the past I’ve taken some shots at Glen Beck, and for good reason. However, I don’t think there’s a chance he’d ever be considered to appear on This Week. This Week is supposed to be a show where level-headed adults discuss current events, which is why it’s so puzzling to me that ABC decided to book Bill Maher as a participant in the round-table.

On HBO it’s okay for Maher to indulge his ignorant generalizations about Republicans or his misinformed ideas about Brazil’s oil usage, but This Week is the real world. You have to give credit to Maher. It takes a great deal of effort to come off less sensible than Al Sharpton.

Mickey Edwards has an op-ed in The Atlantic titled “On Discovering Bill Maher” that is hilarious because Edwards had never heard of listened to Maher until he was on This Week. Here are some of Edwards’ observations about Maher’s idiotic remarks:

I had actually been watching something else on television (a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald), but switched in time to watch Mr. Maher’s performance.  I’m glad I did.  Had I not done so, I would have continued to be among those blissfully unaware of what a dolt he is, of how hateful and venomous and destructive of civility and intelligent discourse he is.

And so the villain of this piece is?  Not Mr. Maher: he is, sadly, what he is, and that is all he is, and (my heart goes out to him) that is probably all he will ever be; one can only do one’s best with whatever limited capacities one has.  But George Will, Matthew Dowd, Al Sharpton, and Katrina vanden Heuvel, agree with them or not, have a proper place at the grown-up table; one can only wonder what the producers at ABC were thinking when they moved this character to a table at which the likes of George Stephanopoulos, Cokie Roberts, Cokie Roberts, and Sam Donaldson once sat.

A link to the video can be seen here. The look on Maher’s face when George Will asked for clarification about Brazil’s use of oil was hilarious. That’s the type of “real time” that’s missing from Maher’s show on HBO. Hopefully ABC realized that this dolt should not be allowed around adults.

liberals: keep your good ideas to yourself

On August 14, 2009, in Politics, by Henshaw

What happens if you write an intelligent article on health care? Usually, liberals who want universal health care ignore it. But what happens if you’re the CEO of Whole Foods? When I read the op-ed written by said CEO John Mackey, my first thought was the “progressive” liberals who love Whole Foods are going to be outraged. Sure enough, ABC has all the details:

Joshua has been taking the bus to his local Whole Foods in New York City every five days for the past two years. This week, he said he’ll go elsewhere to fulfill his fresh vegetable and organic produce needs. “I will never shop there again,” vowed Joshua, a 45-year-old blogger, who asked that his last name not be published. Like many of his fellow health food fanatics, Joshua said he will no longer patronize the store after learning about Whole Foods Market Inc.’s CEO John Mackey’s views on health care reform, which were made public this week in an op-ed piece he wrote for The Wall Street Journal.

How awesome is this? Mackey’s op-ed isn’t even controversial. I guess simply being in favor of reform that doesn’t burden future generations with insurmountable debt is unforgivable. Then there’s this amazingly ignorant quote from Michael Lent.

“I’m boycotting [Whole Foods] because all Americans need health care,” said Lent, 33, who used to visit his local Whole Foods “several times a week.” “While Mackey is worried about health care and stimulus spending, he doesn’t seem too worried about expensive wars and tax breaks for the wealthy and big businesses such as his own that contribute to the deficit,” said Lent.

This is a typical ill-informed statement by an “all feeling” yet unknowing liberal. Lent doesn’t mention anything in Mackey’s op-ed, but somehow corporate subsidies and war are in the conversation. As astute political observers would know, U.S. corporate taxes are some of the highest in the industrialized world, hence the reason so many corporations receive subsidies. There’s nothing astute about Lent, however; he’s just another clueless Hipster Dufus.

good-bye faux objectivity

On April 27, 2009, in Politics, by Henshaw

The level of press the mainstream media has devoted to Obama is unprecedented. The lovefest began on day one and it’s never stopped.

The nonpartisan research group Center for Media and Public Affairs along with California’s Chapman University released a study that found the nightly newscasts devoted 27 hours, 44 minutes to Pres. Obama’s presidency in his first 50 days. That compares to 7 hours, 42 minutes for Pres. George W. Bush and 15 hours, 2 minutes for Pres. Bill Clinton during the first 50 days of their first terms.
Not only has Obama gotten more coverage, but that coverage has been more positive than his predecessors.
On the ABC, CBS, and NBC evening newscasts, 58% of all evaluations of the president and his policies have been favorable, while 42% were unfavorable. That compares with 33% positive in the comparable period of Bush’s tenure and 44% positive for Pres. Clinton.

Wow, the press loves Obama even more than Clinton. The first 50 days of the Bush administration occurred in rather peaceful times. The economy was entering a small economic recession, but nothing close to what we’re facing today. That being said it would make logical sense that Obama would face harsher criticism during these perilous times than Bush received. Well, the press is basically an arm of the White House, except for Fox.

The first half hour of Fox News’ “Special Report with Bret Baier,” which the study says most closely resembles the network evening newscasts, devoted 10 hours 24 minutes to the Obama administration, nearly as much airtime as CBS gave him.
But Fox News stands apart from its competitors here – only 13% of comments* were considered favorable. On ABC, 57% of the comments were favorable, compared to 58% for CBS and 61% for NBC.

Fox is definitely less friendly to Obama. Basically the idea of “objective journalism” is over. Each network is slowly but surely moving towards a niche audience. Fox was the answer to market dominated by liberal news coverage. Now that Fox has exploited this market MSNBC has tailored their news to liberals. That leaves CNN, ABC, and CBS in the lurch. They were already tilted to the left. What do they do now?

out of wedlock births

On March 21, 2009, in Politics, by Henshaw

The most startling statistics this week was the release of the 2007 birth rates. While most press outlets concentrated on the total number of births (which was largest in the United States history), the most incredible revelation is the number of children born out of wedlock.

The birth rate rose slightly for women of all ages, and births to unwed mothers reached an all-time high of about 40 percent, continuing a trend that started years ago. More than three-quarters of these women were 20 or older. For a variety of reasons, it’s become more acceptable for women to have babies without a husband, said Duke University’s S. Philip Morgan, a leading fertility researcher.

The question we must ask ourselves is this, should this be more acceptable? There’s a wealth of research that suggests out of wedlock children are less likely to become educated, more prone to go to jail, and more likely not to contribute to society in a positive way. Our political correct culture refuses to take action against this problem. It’s getting worse for every segment of American society. The ABC story doesn’t touch on the issue of race. For whatever reason Sarah Palin is mentioned because the left is completely obsessed with her. Here’s what ABC left out.

Even worse, 71.6 percent of out-of-wedlock births are to African American women. This should be alarming to read considering the negative societal implications for children born and raised in single parent households. It is well documented that compared with children born to married couples, those born outside of marriage score lower on tests, have increased chances for committing a crime, have higher chances of living in poverty, experience more emotional and behavioral problems, are more likely to abuse drugs or alcohol, and have higher chances of becoming pregnant as teens.

There can be no debate about the link between poverty and out of wedlock births. The fact that this trend is getting worse for all Americans is alarming because no civilization has ever been able to sustain itself with so many illegitimate births. It seems as if no one wants to talk about it. ABC would rather blame Sarah Palin’s daughter and the fact abortions are down. I guess that’s one way to solve the problem. Kill more babies, that’s the ticket! Yes, the decline continues.
