Here at The Daily Plunge I’ve had a lot of fun with mascots. A recent CBS poll says that 7 out of 10 Americans are dissatisfied with our politicians in Washington. It’s easy to pick on politicians. They do it to themselves. No one represents American politicians better than Guy Smiley. Here’s a guy that never says anything important and is in love with himself. The sad part is Guy Smiley is a fictional creation and the current occupant of the White House is only slightly more qualified to be President… emphasis on slightly.
Guy Smiley knows his job is important and he knows he’s the best. Every successfully politician is in love with themselves. It’s a prerequisite for the position. When Guy Smiley introduces himself he goes all the way.
Thank you. This is Guy Smiley, American’s favorite game show host.
The only thing missing is Hail to the Chief. Below I’ve attached a video from a classic Sesame Street skit “What’s My Job?” Hidden in this video around the 3:04 mark in a gem for the ages.
Guy Smiley: His important job is like mine, only he doesn’t do it as well.
Contestant: Is he the President of the United States?
Guy Smiley: Ah, close but you all guessed wrong.
The answer Guy Smiley was looking for was Sonny Friendly, but I think the contestant’s answer is actually better. Maybe it’s just the economy, but I’m hoping Americans start taking their politicians a bit more seriously. If we don’t, we’ll continue to be represented by a legion of morons who are less appealing than Guy Smiley.
Things are tough these days for the White House. Thankfully though, the Associated Press is doing their part to help out. AP writer Ben Feller is here to tell us that “anger is replacing hope.” From 2006 when the Democrats took over Congress until the culmination of Obama being elected President the press covered the American angst with the Bush administration as a popular uprising full of hope. Nothing has really changed with the average American. Americans are tired of big government and out-of-touch politicians. Obama is clearly out of touch, and clearly loves big government. Pay no mind to the current problems. Ben Fuller tries to remind us of that fateful November 2008 night.
Obama tried to caution people even in the celebration of his election night in 2008. “Our climb will be steep,” he said then. “We may not get there in one year or even one term, but America, I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there.”
This reminds me of all the Associated Press articles that reinforced President Bush’s message after 9/11 that the War on Terror would be a long and difficult conflict. Oh wait, the AP was too busy writing articles on how horrible things were every day to concentrate on “the past.” Now that Obama is in the White House the AP is changing its tune. Angst is no longer hopeful or positive. Angst is an angry, spoiled mob that doesn’t understand how awesome it is to have Obama running the nation.
A new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds that two-thirds of people are either dissatisfied by the way the federal government is working or outright angry about it. And that’s a problem Obama now owns. “The public is not this highly rational, nuanced creature,” Jamieson said. “When the public is unhappy, it blames the status quo. And when you’re the establishment, the ‘change’ election moves to the other party.”
If the public were only more like Obama; that perfect, highly rational, nuanced creature. If the public were more like Obama white doves would fly through the air. There would be peace on Earth. The federal debt would disappear and everyone would have free health care. The template is simple. When Republicans lose popular support it’s a beautiful political story. When it’s the other way around Americans have lost their mind and become an angry, racially-motivated mob. Thanks for reinforcing the stereotype, Mr. Fuller.
The Congress is still corrupt. I know this is a shock to many that believe the new Democrat Congress would be different. Now the approval ratings for Congress are back to their record lows. Louisiana congressman William Jefferson has been indicted and forced to step down from the House Small Business Committee. Where did it all go wrong for the Democrats? Corrupt politicians is hardly a new thing. Democrats are learning that Americans aren’t easy to please.
Democrats are suffering from the same sour American mood that plagued the Republicans. Americans just aren’t content these days. There are plenty of theories out there about what’s bugging the average citizen. Gas prices, Iraq, Paris Hilton, and other petty things are obviously making Americans cynical. It’s not the economy, despite the pessimism that abounds the American economy is still growing. It seems as if the country just doesn’t have the stomach for bad news. I hate to sound cynical myself but isn’t this exactly what Bin Laden and company said would happen to the US after a few years of conflict? It’s even more ridiculous when the country has hardly sacrificed anything since 9/11. The President hasn’t even secured the borders yet.
I hardly have sympathy for the Democrats, but what they’re experiencing is a country that would rather watch Opera, drink Starbucks, and drive a SUV one block than be bothered. We’re a nation full of complainers, upset with the President and the Congress. What would happen if the country experienced truly difficult times? I hope I never have to find out.
