History According to the Associated Press

On October 18, 2010, in Politics, by Henshaw

Is there anything more hilarious than reading liberal journalists interpretation of the current political climate? The current political climate is simple: The economy is suffering under the the highest period of unemployment in a generation, the Congress is corrupt, and the legislation passed during the past two years is unpopular. That’s all there is to it. You don’t have to have a Master’s in political science to figure it out; however, the Associated Press doesn’t appear to have a clue.

Congress passed an $814 billion economic stimulus package soon after President Barack Obama took office, tapping a staggering sum of money to avoid a full-blown depression. Democrats have trumpeted the gains from that effort, but know it’s not enough for restive voters. “Americans still see themselves in a ditch,” said House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer.

The two other landmark acts of this session were the health care overhaul, a giant step toward universal coverage that had eluded presidents back to Franklin Roosevelt if not Teddy Roosevelt, and the Wall Street accountability act.

Obama has also signed into law at least a dozen other pieces of legislation of significance. They include:

  • Making college loans more affordable.
  • The Cash for Clunkers program that helped rejuvenate the auto industry.
  • New consumer protections for credit card users.
  • Making it easier for women to challenge pay discrimination.
  • Increasing federal regulation of tobacco products.
  • Cracking down on waste in Pentagon weapons acquisition.
  • Making attacks based on sexual orientation a federal hate crime.
  • Giving businesses tax incentives to hire unemployed workers.
  • Tax credits for first-time homeowners.

So where is the love?

This is the reality the mainstream press lives in on a daily basis. It’s really a bizarro reality. It’s a world where the Democrats saved Americans from another Great Depression, a college education is more affordable, businesses are hiring, the auto industry is rejuvenated, and credit card companies aren’t gouging customers.

Liberals simply think if you believe that a piece of legislation is going work then it works. ObamaCare is already a disaster. Insurance premiums are already going up. The American auto industry hasn’t been rejuvenated. College tuition is still skyrocketing. So-called journalist Jim Abrams needs to get his head out of his ass and take a look around. His article isn’t news. It isn’t smart. It’s just a talking point for the DNC. This is the state of journalism at the Associated Press.

The current political climate isn’t comparable to the ’60s. When the Democrats passed LBJ’s Great Society the legislation was popular. None of the Democrats’ “accomplishments” in this term have been popular. Popularity be damned; they passed the bills anyway. Americans hate pork, but the Congress passed an 800 billion dollar “stimulus” bill filled with pork. President Obama promised to eliminate pork, yet he signed the biggest steaming pile of pork ever conceived. I know this is shocking to liberals, but when you pass legislation that’s unpopular the price is an electoral massacre.

Jim Abrams may believe it’s because the Democrats haven’t done enough, but believe me they’ve done way too much. These bureaucrats have been in power for four years too long. Hopefully, the Republicans learned something. Democrat Light isn’t going to cut it.

Ben Feller Wants a Job at the White House

On February 15, 2010, in Politics, by Henshaw

Things are tough these days for the White House. Thankfully though, the Associated Press is doing their part to help out. AP writer Ben Feller is here to tell us that “anger is replacing hope.” From 2006 when the Democrats took over Congress until the culmination of Obama being elected President the press covered the American angst with the Bush administration as a popular uprising full of hope. Nothing has really changed with the average American. Americans are tired of big government and out-of-touch politicians. Obama is clearly out of touch, and clearly loves big government. Pay no mind to the current problems. Ben Fuller tries to remind us of that fateful November 2008 night.

Obama tried to caution people even in the celebration of his election night in 2008. “Our climb will be steep,” he said then. “We may not get there in one year or even one term, but America, I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there.”

This reminds me of all the Associated Press articles that reinforced President Bush’s message after 9/11 that the War on Terror would be a long and difficult conflict. Oh wait, the AP was too busy writing articles on how horrible things were every day to concentrate on “the past.” Now that Obama is in the White House the AP is changing its tune. Angst is no longer hopeful or positive. Angst is an angry, spoiled mob that doesn’t understand how awesome it is to have Obama running the nation.

A new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds that two-thirds of people are either dissatisfied by the way the federal government is working or outright angry about it. And that’s a problem Obama now owns. “The public is not this highly rational, nuanced creature,” Jamieson said. “When the public is unhappy, it blames the status quo. And when you’re the establishment, the ‘change’ election moves to the other party.”

If the public were only more like Obama; that perfect, highly rational, nuanced creature. If the public were more like Obama white doves would fly through the air. There would be peace on Earth. The federal debt would disappear and everyone would have free health care. The template is simple. When Republicans lose popular support it’s a beautiful political story. When it’s the other way around Americans have lost their mind and become an angry, racially-motivated mob. Thanks for reinforcing the stereotype, Mr. Fuller.

the ap continues the katrina myth

On February 19, 2009, in Politics, by Henshaw

I have stated in the past that the media coverage on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina was the worst in my lifetime. The narrative of that event is so firmly entrenched that it doesn’t even have to be explained. Just look at this story from the Associated Press which is about how the stimulus package ignores New Orleans.

It’s a significant change in tone from the Bush years, when any perceived slight of Katrina victims was met with charges that the Republican president who bungled the initial response to the disaster continued to callously ignore the Gulf’s needs years later.

Huh? The initial response wasn’t bungled. What are the facts from Katrina?

1) The city of New Orleans was missed by the center of the storm. The city itself experienced winds of a category 1 storm.
2) The levees broke and people who failed to evacuate were caught in their homes. Those people had adequate time and resources to leave. If there was any failure at all by government it was city and state governments who failed to evacuate their citizens.
3) The crime reported by the press during the disaster was exaggerated and in many cases didn’t happen at all.
4) The National Guard’s response to the storm was quicker that hurricanes Hugo and Andrew.
5) The state of Louisiana had many opportunities for four decades to fix the levies. The state is corrupt and environmentalists who were more concerned with alligators than humans blocked it.

Apparently Americans have watched too many Michael Bay movies and believe that rescue teams fall out of the sky immediately after a natural disaster. The journalists on the ground were more concerned with blaming Bush than covering the news. Bush’s biggest mistake was telling a crony Michael Brown he was doing a good job when it didn’t fit the media narrative. The press never apologized for all the mistakes they made and never held the local governments accountable for forty years of bad policy. Even the clown that claimed people were eating each other stood by his op-ed in the Huffington Post. There’s a lot of stuff Bush did as president that I don’t agree with, but the bugling of Katrina isn’t on the list. It’s a modern day fabrication.

(Ayers = Terrorist) + Obama = Racism?

On October 5, 2008, in Politics, by Henshaw

Douglass K. Daniel of the Associate Press has written an Obama lovefest article. It should be be an interesting week for the press. They’re going to pull out all the stops to defend Obama and his connection to William Ayers. Just imagine if Senator McCain worked on a committee and attended a fundraiser with an abortion clinic bomber. Not only would the press never let us forget it (Tom Harkin), there’s no way McCain would get the nomination. When it’s the other way around the press dismisses it and doesn’t even take the time to look at the connection. Citing Newsweek, Time, and the New York Times as sources for debunking the relationship is as good as citing the Obama campaign. Daniel goes even further and blames racism, no really!

By claiming that Democrat Barack Obama is “palling around with terrorists” and doesn’t see the U.S. like other Americans, vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin targeted key goals for a faltering campaign.

And though she may have scored a political hit each time, her attack was unsubstantiated and carried a racially tinged subtext that John McCain himself may come to regret.

Racially tinged? Can anyone see where this is going? If Obama is elected in a month is this going to be the standard defense for Obama? The opposition is just racist? How does Daniel come up with this racist charge?

Palin’s words avoid repulsing voters with overt racism. But is there another subtext for creating the false image of a black presidential nominee “palling around” with terrorists while assuring a predominantly white audience that he doesn’t see their America?

In a post-Sept. 11 America, terrorists are envisioned as dark-skinned radical Muslims, not the homegrown anarchists of Ayers’ day 40 years ago. With Obama a relative unknown when he began his campaign, the Internet hummed with false e-mails about ties to radical Islam of a foreign-born candidate.

Obama is still a relative unknown! It’s a month before election day and the press hasn’t objectively looked into the Senator’s history in Chicago, his connection to ACORN, his work with Ayers, his ties to Tony Rezko, and his crazy pastor Jeremiah Wright. Obama’s campaign doesn’t even have to release talking points, the press writes them.

Her [Palin] reference to Obama’s relationship with William Ayers, a member of the Vietnam-era Weather Underground, was exaggerated at best if not outright false. No evidence shows they were “pals” or even close when they worked on community boards years ago and Ayers hosted a political event for Obama early in his career.

Why did Ayers host a fundraiser for Obama if they weren’t close? Why isn’t Ayers’ wife mentioned? It’s amazing to me that the press continues to hang charges of racism and divisiveness on McCain when Obama talks about “typical white people” and refers to rural Americans as bitter, clinging to guns, and religion or antipathy. I’m not sure how Obama expects to bring people together, but it’s obvious the press is doing all they can to tear people apart.
