Newsletter Hell: Part 2

On November 6, 2010, in Blogosphere, Politics, by Henshaw

Three months ago I wrote about my unfortunate issue with LA Progressives’ newsletter hell. I thought I was out, but just like Michael Corleone they’ve “pulled me back in.” Today I received a newsletter titled Hollywood Progressive. At first I gave them the benefit of the doubt, but then I read the unsubscribe message.

Damn you Dick Price and your inability to manage unsubscribe requests. The newsletter is part of a new Dick Price production called Hollywood Progressive. According to the website “this endeavor will be independent of any political party or organization, and will be run in collaboration with L.A. Progressive (www.LAProgressive.com), a left-leaning Los Angeles-based website which receives 100,000-plus unique pageviews per month.”

Ah, independent of any political party or organization. I guess that means they’re not working with the DNC. There’s nothing politically independent about the website. Unless, of course, you consider the follow excerpt from a review of Fair Game “independent.”

This is an excellent dramatization of the high level leaking of CIA operative Valerie Plame’s (Naomi Watts) identity to the press after her husband, ex-Ambassador Joe Wilson (Sean Penn), dared to publicly debunk His Royal Anus George W. Bush’s lies about Iraq’s purported nuclear weapons program in his 2003 State of the Union rant. [emphasis added]

Wow, that’s some really highbrow independent stuff. I suppose Dick Price is trying to compete with Big Hollywood. This is going to be an uphill climb because no one really cares about Dick Price. The only reason I care is because he keeps spamming my email box. I never even signed up for his newsletter. My only crime is that I made the mistake of commenting on one of the bizarro rants on the website.

Newsletter Hell

On August 6, 2010, in Blogosphere, Fun With Email, by Henshaw

I’ve had the darnedest time unsubscribing from LA Progressive’s newsletters. I know, I know… how did I get subscribed in the first place? I left a couple of comments on some really idiotic posts and evidently the webmaster automatically subscribed everyone with an email address to their newsletter. It wouldn’t even be that annoying if the unsubscribe would have worked. This went on for months, with two of my email address. Today they finally honored my request. Here’s the exchange.

Michael,

We unsubscribed this address.
Care to tell us why you’re leaving?

– Dick Price, Editor

Here’s is my response. I think it sums it up quite well.

Dick,

I never signed up for your newsletter. A few months ago I had the terrible misfortune of reading an article on your site that was attempting to draw comparisons between Avatar and the Iraq War. I decided to leave a comment. Obviously, this is where I made a mistake because at some point you decided to start sending newsletters to everyone who has ever commented.

How do I know this you might ask? Well, according to Google I left another comment on your site with a different email address in Feb. 2009. I know, right? I’m shocked that I stumbled onto your site twice as well. Anyway, you have also been spamming that email address.

Poor site design and IT practices aren’t that uncommon so I really don’t mind, but your annoying newsletter doesn’t even have a way to unsubscribe. Sure, you have an “unsubscribe button” but it leads to a page that doesn’t do anything. It’s a lot like ObamaCare. “Progressives” feel great that they’ve passed “something” but ultimately it’s like your unsubscribe page. In other words, it’s worthless.

Finally, in order to unsubscribe I had to track down your direct email address.

If it were only so easy to contact our representatives and unsubscribe from their “progressive” polices.

Thanks for unsubscribing me.

Iran Suspends Gmail for Citizens

On February 10, 2010, in Miscellaneous, by Henshaw

In another blow for freedom, Iran is launching its own email service and suspending GMail. I guess this will make it easier to monitor the population. After the riots last Spring it seems like Twitter will be banned before too long. As far as Google is concerned it’s not clear why Iran doesn’t like the company. Google donates almost exclusively to the Democratic Party. Shouldn’t the Islamic Republic love that?

Iran’s telecommunications agency announced what it described as a permanent suspension of Google Inc.’s email services, saying a national email service for Iranian citizens would soon be rolled out.

It wasn’t clear late Wednesday what effect the order had on Gmail services in Iran, or even if Iran had implemented its new policy. Iranian officials have claimed technological advances in the past that they haven’t been able to execute
