The Debt Ceiling: A Nation Led by Clowns

On July 28, 2011, in Politics, by Henshaw

Eventually the financial reckoning will come and our leaders could have prevented it.

The current debt ceiling debate is one of the most depressing episodes I can remember. Well, ObamaCare comes to mind. Democrats are suddenly consumed with the fear of default. Consider me unimpressed. Democrats didn’t care about the debt when they passed an $800 billion stimulus. The economy wasn’t improved, but the Democrats got their pork. They didn’t care when they shoved ObamaCare down the nation’s throat with every sleazy legislative maneuver they could muster.

CNN has published two op-ed pieces by John Avlon in the past week where he blames the GOP for the current problem. Why is it that Democrats are never responsible for any partisanship? I don’t think Avlon has thought about it very much. A few weeks ago the GOP passed a debt ceiling bill and the Senate, led by Democratic Senator Harry Reid, tabled it. In other words, they killed it. Reid never offered a bill of his own. Now the GOP is attempting to pass a compromised version of the bill and Senator Reid is threatening to kill it and Obama is threatening to veto it.

Speaker Boehner’s new bill offers $22 billion in savings this year, and $917 billion over 10 years. Please note that those are billions, not trillions, which is the actual term used to describe how far in debt we are. Is it surprising that the new members of Congress are reluctant to get on board? The freshmen members of Congress were elected to right the ship, not to ignore the iceberg. The Democrats are refusing to adopt a bill that barely covers the stimulus money we spent two years ago. The nation has $114 trillion in unfunded liabilities. Saving just shy of a trillion dollars over a decade is chump change.

Political posturing is nothing new. It happens every year. It happens around every election. What kills me about this issue is that we’re supposed to be believe the GOP’s plan is “extreme.” It doesn’t actually cut anything. No one in Washington is talking about real cuts. These are reductions in the rate of growth. How am I supposed to believe liberals are serious about fiscal restraint when they characterize the opposition’s ”non-cuts” as extreme? What would Democrats call me? I believe the entire federal government should be reduced by 20% across the board.

So many Americans are fed up with politicians of every kind. They complain about lobbyists, corporate money, corruption, and the lack of term limits. Americans like to feel like they have no power because it absolves them of guilt. Americans are to blame for this mess. Americans continue to elect corrupt politicians. Americans continue to remain ignorant about economics. Americans are addicted to unsustainable government handouts.  We the People are the problem.

The GOP members of the House are being raked over the coals for endorsing a plan that doesn’t cut anything. How are we ever going to cut anything if this is the status quo?

The most depressing part of the whole budget battle in Washington is the left. Even if the Democrats cave to the Republican position on the budget the severe fiscal problems facing the nation aren’t addressed. The Democratic party and most of the people who vote for them are simply in denial. Or maybe they’re simply ignorant. I really don’t have an answer for it.

The main talking points from the left are raise taxes on the rich, cut the defense budget, and that Republicans want people to die. Here is Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s take on the situation:

“Republicans want to shut down the government because they think there’s nothing more important than keeping women from getting cancer screenings. This is indefensible and everyone should be outraged,” Reid said on the Senate floor.

How can liberals complain about Rush Limbaugh, FOX news, or Glenn Beck when the Democrat’s leader in the Senate makes such idiotic statements? Reid’s statement is outrageous and detached from reality. Oh, but there’s more. MSNBC professional race baiter Jesse Jackson compares the current debate to the American Civil War.

“[T]his really is a Civil War fight,” Jackson said. “This is making the federal government dysfunctional on the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. These guys will support three wars. They’ll support tax dodgers. They’ll support the wealthiest Americans getting tax breaks. They want to cut into education and health care. This is an ideological battle.”

Jackson said those trying to shut down the federal government are doing so to make an “ideological-religious point.”

“This is a Civil War fight,” he said. “I think Time magazine has it right. This is the 150th anniversary of the 1861 Civil War. Now those are determined to shut the federal government down to make their point — their ideological-religious point.”

It’s it a little odd that a man who calls himself a reverend is talking about an “ideological-religious point?” I wish I could say that I’m picking some random nutjobs on the left, but these are respected liberals who are willing to say whatever it takes to cash in some political points. I don’t think Americans are listening to this garbage any more, but the same cannot be said of the left. The liberal echo chamber is creating a group of willfully ignorant condescending people. They don’t want to debate. They don’t want to be informed. They just want their Utopian worldview justified.

The anti-war left has their talking points: “Bush lied people died,” “Neo-con,” and “Haliburton.” The big government left has their economic talking points: “Reaganomics,” “Voodoo Economics,” “Tax the Rich,” and “The Shrinking Middle-class.” Ask a liberal to explain any of these nonsesnical terms and they’ll change the subject.

If we only taxed the rich more and got rid of our defense department the world would love us, we would have free health care, and every child would be a super genius because they would have free high speed internet. It’s all so dumb, but that’s the reality on the left.

The Party of Denial

On March 17, 2011, in Politics, by Henshaw

As you can probably tell we’ve made some changes here at The Daily Plunge. It was time for a new theme. This is very clean. I’ll probably make some tweeks over the next few weeks when I find time to play with it.

In other news, here’s a video from MSNBC that tells you all you need to know about the Democratic party. Senator Harry Reid doesn’t even want to talk about Social Security for twenty more years.

It’s truly astounding the level of denial that exists on the organized left. I’m not sure it’s true denial or just the leadership protecting the best interests of the party. Whatever the reason, it’s sad and pathetic.

HT: Hot Air

Let the Section 8 block party commence!

Bread and Circuses: 30,000 people lined up for Section 8 housing application in East Point, Georgia today. The chance to receive a government-subsided apartment is a bigger draw in Atlanta than the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team. It’s comforting to know that there are so many people ready to take a hand out

The massive event sometimes descended into a chaotic mob scene filled with anger and impatience. Some 62 people needed medical attention and 20 of them were transported to a hospital, authorities said. A baby went into a seizure in the heat and was stabilized at a hospital. People were removed on stretchers and when a throng of people who had been waiting hours in a line were told to move to another line, people started pushing, shoving and cursing, witnesses said.

You would be hard pressed to find any event that symbolizes Atlanta better than this angry mob. The best part of the this story is that East Point officials declared the event a success. I’m not sure if the officials are completely clueless or that they set their expectations so low that 62 people who needed medical attention is a success. At least no one was shot.

Harry Reid’s Race Obsession: The left’s obsession with racism is diabolical. Illegal immigration is not a race issue. The only people bringing up race into this debate are Democrats like Harry Reid who view illegal immigrants and Hispanics as a potential voting bloc.

U.S. Sen. Harry Reid on Tuesday slammed Republicans for blocking comprehensive immigration reform and told Hispanics they shouldn’t be treated differently because “their skin’s a tone darker” than that of America’s early European immigrants. “I don’t know how anyone of Hispanic heritage could be a Republican, OK,” Reid said, speaking to Latino supporters whose votes he needs to win re-election in November. “Do I need to say more?”

This type of divisive and ignorant rhetoric needs to come to an end. It’s not constructive; it’s ugly and it represents the worst about politics. Democrats don’t seem to have anything else to offer besides characterizing everyone who disagrees with their politics as racists. This comes after four years of corruption, failed policies, and broken promises.

College Football Polls! It’s silly season again. It’s that time of the year when polls are out that rank college football teams based on what they accomplished last season with different players. College Football News came out with their top five on Monday and Georgia is 3rd! What? Yeah, the Dawgs will start the season around 20 in the two most important polls, but it’s nice see someone thinks they’re a sleeper team. Plus, College Football News is a pretty popular site. I’ve been reading it for almost a decade and they’re usually pretty good with predictions. That means UGA will likely lose four games.

Duke Nukem FOREVER: There are video game classics like Doom, Civilization, and Super Mario Brothers. These games are classics due to their overwhelming popularity. Then there’s Duke Nukem Forever. This game has been in development since 1997. No game has been delayed, restarted and funded more than Duke Nukem Forever. Like the city of Houston, the game is synonymous with futility. Last year it appeared that game had finally died, but it appears that it’s still alive:

Oh boy, another Duke Nukem story. It seems that the lawsuit between 3D Realms and Take 2 has been settled, and now Duke Nukem Forever is in the capable hands of Gearbox, developer of Borderlands and the Brothers In Arms series. The question is: who could possibly care? Consider my predicament. I’ve heard about Duke Nukem Forever since 1997, when I first read about it in a game magazine. (Ultra Game Players, I believe.) How can I possibly care about the game in 2010, or 2011, or 2012?

They should just abandon the game altogether and work on a movie about the making of the game. I’m sure a movie would be 100% more interesting than any game that comes out at this point.

Men Without Jobs

On February 23, 2010, in Politics, by Henshaw

Come January 2011 it’s increasingly likely that Majority Leader Senator Harry Reid will no longer be employed. That makes the video below all the more strange.

Is this a justification for the jobs bill or a cry for help? It’s a fairly strong indication that the bill being debated in Congress is worthless when abuse is used for justification. All this time I thought we could blame domestic abuse on the Jews living in Israel

harry reid’s political days are numbered

On January 10, 2010, in Immigration, Politics, by Henshaw

Typically in politics there are things you can do and things you can’t do. Affairs, DUI, corruption, communist tendencies, and manslaughter are all things the public can look past. However, you can’t say anything that can remotely be associated with being racist. I should not there are two standards. There’s the Democrat standard and there’s a Republican standard. When Trent Lott made controversial comments about Strom Thurmond he was force to step down as Minority Leader. Former Klansman and Senate Majority Leader Robert Byrd simply had to apologies for his racist remark on television.
This brings me to Senator Harry Reid. The embattled Senator from Nevada is facing a tough reelection bid already. Now the Majority Leader is in trouble for some off-color comments about the President.

Senator Harry Reid, the Democratic majority leader, apologized on Saturday for once predicting that Barack Obama could become the country’s first black president because he was “light-skinned” and had “no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.”

Reid made the comment to the two authors of the book, “Game Change.” What was Harry thinking? The whole things sounds to me like an inside job. Someone probably wants Reid’s position. President Obama has forgiven Reid.

“I accepted Harry’s apology without question because I’ve known him for years. I’ve seen the passionate leadership he’s shown on issues of social justice, and I know what’s in his heart,” Mr. Obama said in a statement, adding that the remark was “unfortunate.” “As far as I am concerned, the book is closed.”

Ah, the Church of the Democratic Party offers forgiveness of racism for party membership. At the Catholic Church you simply have to offer confession and do ten Hail Marys and one Glory Be. When a Democrat mentions social justice what does that mean?
Harry Reid wasn’t around during the Civil Rights era. He’s been a Senator since the 80s. Democrats have been paying lip service to African Americans since President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act, but they haven’t done anything productive in over forty years. Democrats sure have milked that voting bloc though.
On social issues like abortion, gay marriage, and immigration African Americans share more in common with Republicans than they do with Democrats. What Democrat policy is helping African Americans? Social justice is a clever political phrase, but it’s not a license for forgiveness.
