Media Temple Issues: The Daily Plunge is experiencing some hosting problems. Our host, Media Temple, got hacked a few weeks ago and it appears that WordPress users were the target. I’ve solved the problem about a website redirect, but the blog has been sluggish the past few days. Hopefully Media Temple eliminates some of the down time. This blog has been running at a snail’s pace on the backend and completely reinstalling may not be the answer.

Dog Bites Man, Saves Life: Who says our health care system doesn’t work? A dog bit off a man’s big toe and actually saved his owner’s life. No, really!

Kiko smelled an infection in his owner’s right big toe and set about “amputating” it. Which in doggie terms, of course, means he ate it. All the while, Kiko’s owner, Jerry Douthett of Rockford, Mich., lay passed-out drunk in his bed. (We told you it was bizarre.)

Mr. Douthett had been told by his wife (a registered nurse) to get the toe checked out by a doctor. Instead of heeding his wife’s advice he decided to get wasted instead. The dog took care of the rest.

JetBLUE: Today, the actions of Steven Slate will live in infamy. The JetBlue flight attendant had a complete meltdown after a flight had landed  at JFK. Evidently one more rule breaker pushed Slate over the edge.

Slater, a 20-year veteran of the airline industry, cursed at the passenger on the plane’s public address, announced he was leaving, grabbed a couple of beers from the galley and slid down the emergency chute that he had deployed, officials and news reports said.

This is a meltdown of Mel Gibson-like proportions. However, no one is really rallying around Mr. Gibson. Slater, though, has already received the admiration of many on the internet. Slater’s lawyer has already come up with a defense.

“People just don’t have courtesy for one another. He’s been in the airline industry since he’s 19 and people just aren’t polite. I don’t know if you travel, aren’t you aware of how rude people are?” defense lawyer Howard Turman said.

I think we can all sympathize to some degree about having to deal with classless morons; however, mean people aren’t a new phenomenon and being rude to an entire plane full of passengers cannot be justified under any circumstance. Slater deserves whatever punishment he receives, which we hope will be riding in coach every day for the rest of his life.

Dennis Kucinich News: White House press secretary Robert Gibbs is getting annoyed with the nutroots. Gibbs told The Hill that the Left “wouldn’t be satisfied if Dennis Kucinich was president…” I think we can all agree on that point. Does this signal an eventual move to the center by the President? Maybe, maybe not. Gibbs seems to think they’re in the center already, if you consider “center” to be slightly left of Fidel Castro. That’s not a good sign.

Fallen Idol: Lookout Lindsay Lohan! American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino tried to kill herself and, of course, it didn’t work out. Although Fantasia was unsuccessful, this just might be the kick-start her career needed. Hello rehab!

I don’t have anything in particular to talk about this evening, but here’s what I found when I went trolling for links…

Whoopi Goldberg: I forgot to mention this a few days ago, but it looks like I spoke too soon about Whoopi Goldberg. She doesn’t think Mel Gibson is a racist, racist. Goldberg believes the Tea Party has racist elements, but Mel Gibson’s rants are just the product of alcoholism, kind of like Reggae is just the product of marijuana.

Speaking of Mel Gibson, it looks like at least some of the tapes that have been released have been doctored. It seems like a stretch to believe the tapes could be edited enough to manufacture all those quotes; however, why would they bother editing the tapes? My suspicions were aroused by all the Old Spice ads peppered throughout.

Roman Polanski: It appears the Department of Justice under the mismanagement of Eric Holder botched the case by not relaying key information to the Los Angeles DA. I’m sure there’s a logical explanation for this, but my guess is the DoJ is more concerned about pursuing a nonsensical lawsuit against Arizona to be worried about child rapists at large.

Way-too-early presidential polls: Everyone knows it’s way too early for 2012 polls, but that doesn’t make them any less interesting. President Obama is polling below most of his prospective Republican rivals. The most shocking aspect of the poll is that he’s tied with Sarah Palin. That’s sure to send the left into a rabid conniption fit, not that it takes much to do it. All it really takes is two words: Sarah Palin.

Apple iPhone 4: Apple has really botched the PR with its new phone. The issue with the antenna has cause a lot of embarrassment. Steve Jobs is throwing together a damage control press conference tomorrow. Let’s just call it what it is…  iDamage Control. BTW… What the hell are we doing with antennas in the 21st Century anyway?

Old Spice Commercials: Finally, I can’t help but point out genius marketing when I see it. The new Old Spice ads are fantastic. I found myself saying “swan dive” and chuckling to myself quite a lot today. No wonder I almost got fired.

Mel Gibson vs. Roman Polanski

On July 12, 2010, in Real Problems, by Henshaw

Two Oscar winning directors with some personal problems.

By now pretty much everyone has probably heard about Mel Gibson’s profanity-laced rant directed toward his former girlfriend. When an actor like Gibson has a meltdown like this (see: Alec Baldwin) it’s going to be big news. When the actor mixes in some racial epithets, it’s an even bigger story. In Hollywood pretty much everything is tolerated except racism. I’m not suggesting that people should scoff at racism, but look at how Roman Polanski has been treated by the Hollywood establishment compared to Mel Gibson.

I have written before about some of the unbelievable comments made by people like Whoopi Goldberg about the child rapist Roman Polanski. I have no problem with Mel Gibson being ostracized from pop culture forever, but what about people who think raping thirteen year old girls is no big deal? Say what you want about Gibson, but at least he’s not raping people (yet). Mel Gibson’s career is headed for a major setback and Polanski is free and Hollywood has his back.

Imagine you’re stuck in a life raft with two Oscar-winning directors. One is Roman Polanski and the other is Mel Gibson. The life raft is slowly taking in water and will only support two people. Someone has to get thrown overboard and it’s either Polanski or Gibson. There’s no clear choice based on age or weight. It comes down to personality. The rapist versus the racist.

The easiest way for me to decide in situations like this is, would I trust someone I love with that person? While racism is indeed unsightly and ignorant it’s not quite as invasive as rape. However, it appears that Gibson might be a little violent as well. It’s a tough call. However, as far as I’m concerned, Roman Polanski is a monster. It’s a difficult choice, but I’ll go with Mel Gibson. I just won’t bring up his love life or Jews and I should be fine.

obama: doing what politicians do

On June 11, 2009, in Politics, by Henshaw

There were two sad and unusual items in the news yesterday. The most horrifying event happened when an old Neo-Nazi opened fire at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. The President responded to the shooting by stating “This outrageous act reminds us that we must remain vigilant against anti-Semitism and prejudice in all its forms.” This is a very reasonable thing to say. However, on the same day, Obama’s mentor and pastor of over 20 years, Jeremiah Wright, went on the record with his opinion of the Jews:

“Them Jews ain’t going to let him talk to me,” Wright said. “I told my baby daughter that he’ll talk to me in five years when he’s a lame duck, or in eight years when he’s out of office. …
They will not let him to talk to somebody who calls a spade what it is. … I said from the beginning: He’s a politician; I’m a pastor. He’s got to do what politicians do.”

Unbelievable! Obama surely wasn’t vigilant against anti-Semitism during his 20 years as a member of Wright’s church. To get an idea of how the press has swept this lunatic under the rug, think back to Mel Gibson, who had the nerve to produce a movie about Jesus Christ. Making movies about Jesus requires the full investigative power of the New York Times, while running for president requires the full investigative powers of US magazine into the wardrobe choices of Michelle Obama. My guess is more Americans know that Gibson’s dad is a raving anti-Semite than know that Obama’s mentor is a racist and an anti-Semite. It’s like we’re living in an alternate reality.
